Information On Our Mail System

Please use your Domain Name as the Host Name and as the SMTP Server. Defaults recommend:

POP account:Domainuser@Domainname.com
POP server:Your Domain name
SMTP Server: Your domain name

All Virtual accounts come with unlimited POP email accounts. The first or main POP account will always be "domainuser@domainname.com" (the "domainuser" being the same as your domain name but without the ".com" or any other domain suffix.) account is fixed at your domainuser@domainname.com and is considered your administrative email account for all business, and questions regarding your account with Hosting Solutions. Additional accounts can be setup for you if needed via your domain manager.

Subsequent accounts are flexible can be named anything not already in existence on the server you are sharing regardless of domain name. The exceptions being popular names such as webmaster, info, techsupport, staff, admin, sales, and such. Use your domain manager's mail manager system to create these as aliases, DO NOT attempt to set up these standard main addresses as POP accounts.

All Virtual accounts have a file in your home directory named " .redirect "
This file is where you will setup additional email addresses (aliases) @domainname.com. You can even use this file to forward mail being sent to your administrative account back to your existing email address at your local service provider.

E-mail Redirection & Aliases

Keep in mind that the .redirect file is invisible via ftp. To edit it, simply use your domain manager's mail manager. To view it you will need to telnet into your account and type the command "cat .redirect" The file .redirect in your home directory can be edited in the following manner:

Create a file in your home directory named .redirect
The rest of the file looks like this:

joey joey@compuserve.com
susan susan.simpoon@mci.com
kim goddess@alterlife.com
default domainuser@domainname.com

This would redirect mail for joey@domainname.com to joey@compuserve.com, etc.

Mail to a user that was not in this list would be sent to the default user, domainuser@domainname.com

You may create as many aliases at your domain in this file as long as it conforms to the basic structure and the target address are real POP boxes somewhere. Please do not create endless mail loops by setting up autoresponders with the same names as your aliases, they will be turned off and you will lose this privilege!

The system automatically creates a .redirect file in your home directory which activates your mail forwarding and aliasing features. For example, if your domain is freddy.com, the .redirect file will be in /home/freddy

Notes (if editing the .redirect file directly)*

  • Keep the same format.
  • All lines flush against the left margin.
  • The space between the alias and the forward address represents 2 or so "tabs"
  • No space(s) after a line --just between the alias and the target address.
  • No extra line(s) after the default line.

It is preferable to create this file right on the server using vi or pico, If however you are not familiar with telnet:

  • Do Not Create this file in notepad - use an html editor and save the file as a text file (.txt)
  • When uploading via ftp manually select the ASCII mode.
  • Once you get it to your HOME directory rename it if needed.

In Addition

  • ***Do not create directories in your /usr/home directory that have the same name as a line in your .redirect file or an infobot text file. This will just cause mail loops and other problems.

And rememberthat once it is renamed .redirect it will become invisible on your FTP, as all files starting like .file
Totally redirecting all your mail to another remote location

Create a file named " .forward" in your home directory. The home directory for a user named freddy would be /home/freddy Enter somewhere@faraway.com in this file. Now all your mail will be redirected from your user account to somewhere@faraway.com!

This file is a one liner and looks like this:

freddy@faraway.com

You should not use both the .redirect and the .forward file at the same time unless you are using another mail manipulation program such as MReply.

Using both files at the same time will result in the .forward being honored first.

All other rules and notes on creating the .redirect file also apply to the .forward file.

PowerMail(tm)

Our system uses the sophisticated PowerMail(tm) mailing system. In addition to being able to redirect mail for everyone in your domain by simply modifying the .redirect file, you can also have nearly unlimited infobots by simply adding text files to your home directory. Your domain manager also handles these functions quickly and easily!

Infobot Example

File in your home directory is named   techsupport   with no extension. and says:

We offer you techsupport.

Mail to techsupport@yourdomain.com will return the message "We offer you techsupport".

These messages can be any size, even 100K!

  • Create and edit these text files the same as you would your .redirect file in regards to not using note pad, no extra lines at the end, upload in ASCII and the file should have no extention.
So if you must create these infobots on your local computer, upload them as a .txt then rename them to have no file extension.

  • These files go in /home/domainuser

    Also
Keep in mind to receive a copy of any message sent to these infobot text files, You must place a line in your .redirect file that is an equal alias to this infobot file, that forwards to your real POP box on the system. DO NOT, however use this address as a return address on your outgoing mail! Doing so can cause massive mail loops which can bring down the server and result in deactivation of the alias/autoresponder causing the problem!

    Example:

You create an infobot text file in your /usr/home directory named "techsupport"
To receive a copy of the mail sent to this infobot, insert the alias in the .redirect.

techsupport domainuser@domainname.com where domainuser@domainname.com is your real POP box.
